Camille - Music Hole

Some are calling Camille "the French Björk". She certainly has this certain regard, this certain way of approaching music. She loves to play with the sounds and the words. And this makes music so delicious to the ears. Each of her songs are unique in their own little way. She knows how to separate her music from the rest of the musical world.

In her last album "Le fil" (the thread), she played with the idea (no pun intended lol) of having the exact same note played in the background of all the album = the 'thread'. Though it's discreet, this "B" (the note) is constant throughout the 40-ish minutes of the album, linking somehow the different songs together. France discovered her with this album which made her in no time a renown artist.

This year, she offered us a new delightful opus "Music Hole". This one, like the previous one, gives a lot of importance to the voice, the body and the sounds they can make thus reducing the presence of more 'traditional' instruments (only a piano in the album). She's singing mostly in English in this album, which, I hope, will lead her to a great international career.

It's completely impossible to describe her musical style. All that has to be said is that it's eccentric, vocally impeccable and very entertaining.

"Yes we can" le discours d'Obama en chanson

Il est assez difficile de passer à côté de ce qui se passe en ce moment aux Etats-Unis. Non, je ne vous parle pas de la crise financière car ce sujet a passé le stade de la surexploitation. Le dernier débat présidentiel a eu lieu mercredi dernier et nous sommes maintenant à 18 jours des résultats attendus, on peut le dire, par pas mal de gens sur cette terre.

Espérons juste que le futur élu du peuple américain n'inspirera pas le même genre de chanson que son prédécesseur (par exemple, la très bonne chanson "Alzheimer" de Matmatah).

C'est en ayant ce sujet en tête que je me suis amusée à faire un petit test sur Youtube. J'avais déjà eu vent des chansons qui sont faites pour soutenir les candidats à l'investiture. Donc, je me suis demandée si cette technique de vente était toujours d'actualité si peu de temps avant le jour J. Est-ce que les compositions possèdent une once de qualité? Restent-elles principalement l'oeuvre d'amateur voulant soutenir son candidat?

Voilà ce qui ressort de la 1ère page de résultat :
- quand je tape les mots clés "barack obama, song" : Tous les résultats sont des chansons de soutien à Obama dont la plus connue, influente (à mon avis) et travaillée est "Yes we can". Cette chanson, chantée par une ribambelle de célèbrités, reprend un discours fait par Obama lui donnant un petit côté Martin Luther King avec son "I had a dream". Parmi les stars on peut notamment retrouver : Will.i.am, Scarlett Johansson, Kate Walsh, Herbie Hancock, John Legend, etc.
- pour les mots clés "john mccain, song" : Là, c'est une autre histoire. La plupart des vidéos proposées sont des parodies ou des compositions originales satiriques. Au milieu de tout ça, il y a quand même une chanson pro-McCain "Raisin' McCain" par le chanteur country John Rich. La chanson "Yes we can" pro-Obama a fait des émules avec quelques parodies anti-McCain comme "John McCain: No you can't" (dans la liste des vidéos similaires de la chanson Obama) ou la chanson de John.he.is.

Internet donne assez facilement la "température" de l'opinion publique sur ce genre de sujet. La tendance est donnée...

J'aurai pu faire la même chose avec Sarah Palin pour voir si elle suit aussi la même tendance que son complice politique. Mais je me suis dit que les sketchs de l'émission Saturday Night Live dans lesquels Tina Fey joue une Sarah Palin hors du commun (bien que Palin n'ait vraiment pas besoin de ça pour passer pour l'inculte/imbécile/potentielle vice présidente sous-qualifiée qu'elle est). Sketchs que je vous conseille vivement !

"Yes, we can" - Obama speech's song

We're hearing a lot lately in the news about the US presidential election. The last presidential debate took place yesterday and the election is going to take place in 19 days now.

With that in mind I did a little test on the Internet today. I went to Youtube and did a research with the key words "song, obama" and "song, mccain". The results are quite in agreement with what perspires abroad regarding this election.

The first results for each research was:

- for Obama: Real songs of support notably "Yes, we can" in which celebrities take up Obama's speech (with a bit of a Martin Luther King feeling to it) to create a song. Just to name a few: Will.i.am, Scarlett Johansson, Kate Walsh, Tatyana Ali, Herbie Hancock, John Legend, etc.

- for McCain: let's say that it's not really the same. Most of the results are parody or satirical songs. On the first page of results let's say that the only pro-McCain song is the country song "Raisin' McCain" by John Rich (apparently the official McCain song). The Obama "Yes we can" song has quite a few anti-McCain parodies "John McCain: No, you can't" (in the list of related videos to the Obama song) or the song by John.he.is.

The internet is always an easy way to see the "popular" (in its very first definition) popularity of someone. And this is an example of it. It seems like McCain is going to have a hard time getting back on the horse before 4th November.

I could have done a research on Sarah Palin, I'm sure there's a lot of interesting songs about her too but I think that no one can beat the Saturday Night Live sketches with Tina Fey playing her (even if Palin really doesn't need to be parodied to look stupid).

Robots in Disguise - The Tears

A l'occasion de la sortie de leur 3ème album "We're in the Music Biz" j'aimerai vous parler aujourd'hui de Sue Denim et Dee Plume.

Elles se sont rencontrées alors qu'elles étaient toutes les deux étudiantes à l'Université de Liverpool et forment ensemble depuis lors le groupe électro Robots in Disguise. Elles sont toutes les deux aussi déjantées que leur musique pour notre plus grande bonheur. Je défie quiconque de pouvoir écouter leurs albums sans avoir envie de bouger un peu (ne serait-ce que le doigt, le pied,... un léger hochement de tête sur le côté peut-être?).

Si vous n'êtes pas encore familier avec ces demoiselles je suis sûre que vous avez déjà entendu au moins l'une de leurs chansons. En effet, souvenez-vous d'une pub Orange (période de Noël 2004 je crois) et le "You say you want a revolutioooooon... we all want to change the wooorld, wooorld, woooorld..." très remixé pour l'occasion. Non, ça ne vous revient pas? Pas grave, si vous mettez la main dessus vous vous direz "Mais oui bien sûr!" Et si c'est pas le cas c'est pas bien grave! ;)

The release of their third album "We're in the Music Biz" gives me the occasion to present you those two english women. Since their university years (when they met) they form the electro group "Robots in Disguise" and produce music to their image: really entertaining and slightly crazy. You can judge by yourself...
